A Night at the Arcade

By July 25, 2014January 10th, 2018Wedding

I had so much fun photographing Beth and Sean. I know the pictures are pretty and all, but I thought it would be important to start things off this way – that it was fun making the pictures happen.

I think that can get lost easy enough when you see the artwork and images from a wedding. They’re pretty, timeless and elegant – but it’s important to know that the process of creating them was enjoyable.

More important than the process behind the image creation, is the reason we created the images in the first place – joy / love / happiness. Again, it’s so easy to miss the reason – we just focus on the results.

For instance – I LOVE details of wedding days (gown / shoes – the superman themed garter above for instance) – but it’s not about those things. My imagery is about the story of behind those things – the story of two people who fell in love. Yes, these things matter, but only in-so-much as their part of the story.

Story-telling images (candids / photojournalistic wedding photography) is my favorite way to tell the story behind a couple’s day. I love the candid of Beth (on the right – above) – she had such a sweet and relaxing morning with her girls.

And here’s her man – Sean. I got time with the both the ladies and the men earlier in the day, and Sean and the guys were in just as good as spirits at the ladies. Beth gave Sean a kick-butt watch as a gift. Watches are fairly typical gifts for me on wedding days, but Sean’s watch was freaking amaze-balls. Seriously. I love his watch. I might be asking Beth for more info on it so I can ask Colleen to get me one for Christmas πŸ™‚

We had time in the afternoon prior to the day for some men’s and ladies imagery. I love this image above, I shot it on a nearby roof. I pushed hard on the edgy sunlight to pull this image. It just works.

YES – I also love this one too. Super different images these two above – I like to make sure in my image sets that I can give people diverse image options and concepts.

Ok – so Sean gave each groomsmen a corresponding super hero cufflink from the DC universe, my inner nerd was geeking out over it. Sean of course was superman πŸ™‚

Vase to Vase nailed it with the floral arrangements. I ♥ hydrangeas

I loved seeing how Beth’s girlfriends teared up and emotionally connected over Beth putting on her wedding dress. It’s cool to see how ladies share in this with each other – men aren’t generally this way. I really like this about female friendships – you all really know how to celebrate emotionally together.

Speaking of emotions – we set up a father/daughter first look, and boy was it joyful. I loved seeing her father excited and proud of Beth – it got me excited for the day I see my daughters in their wedding dresses πŸ™‚

Except that I want that to not come so fast… and I’m pretty sure we’re not going to let Pearl or Daisy date boys until they’re like 50 πŸ™‚

Yay! Love these girls – we laughed lots in the late spring sun, and really made some cool artwork happen easily. With a fun and easy going group like this, the image creation process was joyous.

Beth is beautiful.

Sean thinks so too. Check out his reaction to Beth coming down the aisle at the Hyatt Arcade just a bit later.

These are the moments that I love to capture during a wedding ceremony – the quick unexpected laughs.

After their wedding ceremony at the Cleveland Arcade Hyatt, we went out for a quick creative session during the cocktail hour. It was pretty awesome – while we were out we ran into Kevin Bacon and Kevin Spacey who were out on an evening stroll together. They agreed to sign some autographs, and then got into a drunken fist fight over who was the better Kevin.

I’m a bigger fan of Kevin Spacey personally, but Kevin Bacon really won the fist fight if I’m going to be honest. And no, none of this really happened. I just saw a commercial on TV for the movie “Tremors”, and they’re also playing “American Beauty” later in the week, and here we are now.
