The Person Behind the Lens

Your wedding photographer is so much more than just a portfolio or a set of “FAQs”, he or she is a real person with a real life. We believe that at the heart of good wedding photography is a healthy relationship between a couple and their photographer. With that in mind, take some time and get to know Luke a bit better with the questions below.

What is your Favorite Part of your Job?

Probably when a client looks at a photo I took and says “Duuuuuuude, how did you do that??” I love creating really sweet images in locations you may look at and think “hmm, why are we shooting here again?” The ability to manipulate and transform a non-appealing location into an appealing artistic image drives me.

What’s Your Favorite Retro Board Game?

GUESS WHO. Best game ever growing up.

What Makes Your Images Artwork and Not Just Snapshots?

There are a lot of technical efforts that go into my images. Every single image I create is well thought out prior to hitting the shutter. Before taking a photo, I think of the outcome and how I want my image to look after it’s edited. This helps me work backwards and compose an image upfront and really think through what can make the photograph look and be unique.

What Are You Like on a Wedding Day?

Same as any other day really…which tends to be laid back and easy going. I enjoy making brides/grooms feel relaxed and comfortable on their big day. Most people tend to be camera shy, so I spend some time guiding couples on how to be natural in front of the camera. I really just like to have a good time and laugh a lot.

Describe your Version of the Perfect Day in your Personal Life. What Would You Do All Day?

I’d go golfing in the morning, kayaking in the afternoon with some buddies, and then hit up a Tribe game to finish off the evening.

Who Are Some of Your Favorite Musical Artists?

Mumford & Sons, Dave Matthews Band, Andrew Belle, Coldplay, and anything with a good beat that makes me wanna hit the dance floor and bust a white boy move.

Outside of Photography Do You Have any Creative Passions?

Acoustic guitar. I used to play every living hour of the day growing up but then I discovered photography…which takes up much of my time now. So during the off-season, I pick up the ole’ six string from time to time and have fun creating new tunes.

Share an Item From Your Bucket List with Us?

I’d love to live in San Diego, California someday. That would be legit.

What is your Favorite Piece of Photographic Equipment?

Does my iPhone camera count? Instagram woot woot!! Jk. But seriously. I’d probably have to go with my 24mm 1.4. I use it a LOT and love having the ability to shoot so wide.

Do you Play any Sports?

Nope. I played sports growing up, but ya know, there comes a day when you gotta hang it up and put bacon on the table. Tee ball just wasn’t paying the bills…

Who Are Your Photographic Heroes and Why?

One stands out for sure. Jeremy Cowart. He is not a wedding photographer but he creates some crazy artistic portraits that are mind blowing. The fact that he is a friggin’ amazing photographer isn’t what makes him my photographic hero though. It’s his passion for life, drive, and humble character that are so appealing to me. He isn’t one to show off his work or seek self-recognition and praise. He’s all about using his gift for something bigger than himself. He is the creator and founder of Help Portrait, a non-profit designed for local photographers to give back to the less fortunate in their respective communities. Extremely inspiring.

Are You Married, Do You Have Kids?

Yep! Happily married to Jessica, who I met freshmen year in college. We dated for roughly four years and tied the knot in May of 2011. Annnnd it just so happens, Vince photographed our wedding. We are excited to have kids someday, but I think we’re going to hold off a few years :)

Favorite Restaurant?

Sushi Rock! Love the atmosphere and ever since I tried sushi for the first time, I can’t get enough. I could eat a spicy tuna roll for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Daily. That’s strange, I’m aware.
